Shawn and Sarah (Smythe) Gardner met while attending Platte Valley Bible College in Scottsbluff, NE. In 1997, under the leadership of Dale Mason, Shawn visited Mozambique and was touched by the eagerness of the people to learn about God's Word. In 1998 Sarah (then engaged to Shawn) visited Mozambique and received numerous requests and letters from the people for her and Shawn to return and work full-time. They married in 1998 and committed themselves to Mozambique. In preparation for the ministry they moved to Portugal in 2000 for 11 months of language study. In 2001 they moved to Nampula, a large city in northern Mozambique, and have set up a home on the outskirts of town.
In January 2003 their first child, Benjamin, was born. In February 2005 Olivia joined the family. They look forward to the arrival of a third baby during the summer of 2006.
The Gardners are Christian Church/ Church of Christ independent missionaries supported by several congregations and individuals. Their sending church is Central Church of Christ in Gering, NE. They work in Mozambique with a group of other independent missionaries under the organization "Good News for Africa."
