Languages

Portuguese is the official language of Mozambique. The majority of people also speak traditional African languages. We work in the north where Makua and Lomwe are spoken.

Religion

The main religion is animism, the worship of spirits and ancestors. Christianity also exists but many times it is combined with traditional animistic beliefs. Islam is also spreading.

Economy

Mozambique is one of the world's poorest nations, with an per capita income of $285. The vast majority lives in extreme poverty and struggle to make ends meet day-to-day. Unemployment is high. Most people have small gardens, which they rely on for sustenance.

Education

Illiteracy is very common, esp. among women and people living in rural areas. However, education is advancing as globalization has come to Africa. There is a huge contrast between the poor, illiterate farmer living in a mud hut in the bush and the young man living in the city, attending high school, studying English and carrying a cell phone.
